How Pool Balls are Made

Pool Balls are made out of polyester or phenolic resin.  Phenolic resin, the better material, is used only by 1 ball maker worldwide, Saluc which manufacturers the Aramith brand of billiard balls.  Phenolic resin has been proven to be the best material available for billiard balls because of its chip and scratch resistant characteristics.

Phenolic resin balls

Phenolic resin balls will last up to five times longer than polyester billiard balls because of their chemical make up which allows the balls to hold their high gloss polish over time therefore creating less friction between the billiard cloth and the billiard balls.

Phenolic resin when heat cured properly offers a stabilized material with homogeneous density dispersion throughout each billiard ball. This means the center of the ball is the true center of the ball, guaranteeing a balanced and accurate roll.  The heat curing process also produces a vitrified high density surface which withstands over 50 times more impacts than polyester balls and resists scratching.

Billiard Ball Standards

Billiard balls should meet seven basic criteria: density, balance, diameter tolerance, roundness, color precision, surface polish, and brilliance after going through a 13 step manufacturing process.  It takes 23 days to produce, cast, cure, grind, and polish the balls.  Tight tolerances and specifications are met through state of the art technology and craftsman checking each ball personally.
